Customer Challenge: Technology Modernization and Digital Security
Founded in 1977, Astraea Lesbian Foundation for Justice is a non-profit organization committed to advancing LGBTQI human rights and supporting racial, economic, social and gender justice. Global in reach, they collaborate with a host of grantee partners, activists, and advocates worldwide.
Over the past decade, Astraea experienced significant growth. With rapidly evolving current and future needs, they needed to modernize and scale their technology infrastructure, too. Their existing Google environment was not sufficient to meet their robust security requirements. Since many of their 60+ core employees frequently travelled to countries with heavy political controls, strict digital security was critical to them. Astraea wanted an ecosystem that fostered the highest level of safety and secure information sharing and kept pace with their growing organizational needs.
The Solution: Robust Google Workspace to Microsoft 365 Migration Plan, Enhanced Security Measures and Customized Support
ProServeIT embarked on a comprehensive migration project for Astraea, transitioning them from Google Workspace to Microsoft 365 Premium (non-profit). The process involved a thorough assessment of current tools, planning sessions, and user training. Key features of the migration included the implementation of a modern intranet for secure information sharing and a uniquely managed Microsoft Teams Voice service tailored to Astraea’s needs.
Enhanced Security Measures
Several Microsoft technologies were enabled to replace existing tools, including Exchange Online for Google Mail, and OneDrive, Teams, and SharePoint for Google Drive and Box.com. Teams Voice replaced Ring Central. Additionally, robust security and compliance components were integrated, such as multi-factor authentication, conditional access, email security, Microsoft Intune, and Microsoft Defender. ProServeIT also created Highly Sensitive Data Repositories for Astraea’s personnel working in countries where their LGBTQI status is illegal.
Customized Support
The solution was implemented in Fall 2023, with ProServeIT providing managed services including transition and onboarding services, managing the Office 365 Tenant, network devices, workstation and desktop security, and service desk support. A communication plan was developed for the launch, and user training facilitated the adoption of the Microsoft 365 features.
The Impact: Greater Protection and A Reliable Tech Ecosystem
With a Modern Work solution in place, Astraea was enabled to provide their knowledge workers with productive and secure tools. They achieved their goal to ensure a high level of security and protection to maintain a safe environment for their users, global constituents, data, and the organization.
Data governance and document approval processes ensured smoother and more secure sharing. Microsoft Intune and Microsoft Defender for Endpoint helped to manage and secure mobile devices and laptops allowing employees to work effectively in any environment. User training accelerated adoption of the Microsoft 365 features which also allowed Astraea to simplify their vendor portfolio.
Empowered with a solid technology foundation, Astraea was finally able to work securely in pursuit of global human rights and a world where everyone can live freely without fear, and with dignity.
